Book Club Potional Reads 2016-2017

Every year I enjoy posting the list of books we as a book club are choosing from for our next year's schedule. Here's what we are pondering reading this next year:

Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy
The Chosen by Chiam Potok
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
All the Truth That's in Me by Julie Berry
Finding Audry by Sophie Kinsella
Bone Gap by Laura Ruby
All the Light We Cannont See by Anthony Doer
Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein
One of Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales
Burning Glass by Kathryn Purdie
a mystery by Anne Perry
The Martian by Andy Weir
Still Alice by Lisa Genova
The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh
Quiet: The Power of Introverts by Susan Cain
I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai
A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote

So...what do you think? Any comments for us on anything in this list? Let us know what we simply MUST read, or simply MUST stay away from!

  1. I've only read a few of these, but I love ALL THE TRUTH THAT'S IN ME, BONE GAP, and CODE NAME VERITY. ALL THE LIGHT was a snoozer for me. I couldn't get past the first few chapters of THE MARTIAN (yawn!), although I loved the movie. I've heard good things about I AM MALALA, QUIET and STILL ALICE, but haven't read any of them.

  2. I read all of Chaim Potok's books a number of years ago and thought they were excellent. I agree with Susan above, All the Light was a snoozer for me too. But I really enjoyed the Martian. I really enjoyed Still Alice, didn't like The Language of Flowers at all.

  3. Nice mixture of books. All the lights we cannot see is one of the best books I read last year! A must. Thomas Hardy is always rewarding.

  4. I voted. But I have to say, " this is what made it to the top?" Hmmm.

    2. I agree with Jenny. Who voted on this stuff? I had to read The Chosen in High School, and I really don't want to read it again.

  5. There are a lot of books on this list that I want to get to someday. I’ve only read Great Expectation, which I liked for the most part, but it is a little strange and dark. I hope you all enjoy whatever is chosen.

  6. If you have not read The Language of Flowers, do read it. I highly recommend this book, so good and so much to discuss. Bone Gap is quite good too, one of my favs for what I read in 2015. (I think you read it already)
I just read I Am Malala for my bookclub. I wasn't thrilled about reading it as memoir are not my thing. With that said, I recommend this book for the story, the story is important. The writing and memoir style didn't agree as much with me though. Bookclubs are fun, very often I read books I would not have otherwise.

  7. I'm with Jenny. This is what made it to the top of the list? Weird. Oh well. I voted too. I guess we'll see what we think as we read them.

  8. I haven't read Quiet but I have listened to some of the podcast and I think it would be an interesting book club pick for discussion!

  10. Still Alice absolutely - great story and I think lots to discuss

All the Light We Cannont See - my bookclub read it, I didn't think a good book club read, not much to talk about in my opinion. I found parts to be beautiful writing but it is only for historical fiction fans I think.

I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai - I think this would be a great choice, haven't read it but I'm interested.

  11. I think that is the fun of book club, trying new things. We don't vote but that's a good idea. The person hosting for the month chooses the book. BTW I did like the Martian.

  12. Everyone I know who's read The Martian really loved it and both The Martian and All the Light We Cannot See made for some great discussion in the Slate Audiobook Club podcast, so they could be good bookclub picks. I also loved Quiet and know a lot of other introverts who enjoyed it too.
